KSOU was established on 1st June 1996, it came into existence by the virtue of KSOU Act 1992. Objective behind the incorporation of Karnataka State Open University was to promote the Distance Learning Education in the Karnataka and other states of India.

At present KSOU have more than 300 Study centres across India providing quality education to its students. The virtue of KSOU was to promote Open Learning Education to those who are deprived of it either because of working or other reason. At present there are more than 3 Lac students participating in various programme offered by KSOU.

As the most basic requirement KSOU is approved university by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

1. Distance Education Council of India, DEC.
2. KSOU is a permanent member of DEC. Any university or institution willing to provide distance learning education in India has to be approved by the Distance Education Council of India.
